Change the shitty 7,2000rpm harddrivers for a WDRaptor to use as C:\ , and buy a nice 160gb storage drive..

10,000rpm hdd's will cut loading times on game, and video edting software, and the best thing is WD Raptors are Lifetime warrently (well they were when i got mine)

Is that all? Mine is 6 years old

I might be getting a computer for my 18th (which is in just under 2 weeks time), possibly same price band as rince, although I might be able to push it up to 1k, so what's the best I could get with 1k? :)

BFG Tech GeForce 7600GT 256MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card : $143.99 (Video Card)

AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ Dual Core Windsor 2.6GHz 2 x 512KB L2 Cache Socket AM2 Processor : $299.99 (Processor)

Xion PowerReal XON-500F14T-201 ATX12V V.2.01 500W Power Supply : $54.99 (After Mail in Rebate) (Power Supply)

CORSAIR XMS 1GB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 : $112.99 (RAM)

BIOSTAR TForce590SLI Deluxe Socket AM2 NVIDIA nForce 590 SLI MCP ATX AMD Motherboard : $179.99 (Motherboard)

Antec LifeStyle SONATA II Piano Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case 450Watt SmartPower 2.0 ATX 12V V2.0 for AMD & Intel systems Power Supply : $59.99 (After Mail in Rebate) (Computer Case)

Total Price: $851.94

Now obviously this is in Dollars not whatever fucked up currency you brits use :P This would give you a lot of room to get more stuff like any extra needed cables, maybe a better motherboard (im not sure how good of one i picked, im not good with motherboards), or even get dual sli video cards. And of course this is all if you or someone you know knows how to build computers.

edit:

another great video card to go for if you want the best manufacturer:

eVGA 256-P2-N624-AR GeForce 7900GS 256MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 KO Video Card : $165.99 (after mail in rebate)

or get rid of the hard drive and something else expensive on here and get this :P

edit x2: k, im getting that $851.94 is 445.68 pounds O_O, so im confused :P

Dont get Opteron wtf, go for the Athlon x2.
That's why my brother's computer doesn't need anti-virus software; 450MHz P3 doesn't meet virus's system requirements.

Oh and that's not going to cost much?

So far I'm going on the basis that I've got a budget of £1000, which has to buy me EVERYTHING (including monitor, sound system, mouse, keyboard).

sound system = headphones
why cant you use the monitor/mouse/keyboard you have now?
cause a good monitor will cost you several hundred pounds, and poof, there goes your 7900 :)

You can get a good quality 17" tft for under £100. (or roughly around that area)
A good 2.1 sound system (with sub) for £20 - £30
Mouse (Depends on what you want, up to £25[ish])
Keyboard (Again, depends how fancy, up to £30[ish])

For all 4, I would not exceed £200.
