I think my video card died o.o

Well, i was browsing these forums and watching a youtube video in HD, when BOOM, my screen freezes up and the pixels on the screen change colors and the appearance gets all glitchy. When i restarted my computer, it booted up to a black screen whenever the OS loaded, so i figured i had a virus and it killed my OS. I reinstalled windows xp media center edition and everything worked fine until i went to install my video card drivers. When i installed the current version, it seemed to install correctly, then my computer restarted due to the installation, and when it booted back up, the color of the windows logo when it loads the OS was a bug glitched out and had various random pixels being a purple color on it, etc. When it started back up, my computer basically had the "found new hardware" software up and it "found" my 8400 gs card and was looking to install it. It couldn't install it because "it wasn't supported by windows xp". Eventually i got frustrated after retrying installing the drivers, and eventually i broke through. After and hour i finally got the drivers to install correctly and the video card installed (not sure atm if its installed or not).

WOW XD. For the past 2 hours my computer has been restarting due to the graphics glitching out and it just restarted as i wrote that last sentence (thank god for firefox and their saving websites). Anyways, I'm going to reinstall my drivers one last time, but i'm fairly certain that my video card has died . Either that or my new psu might be doing this

OH What, shit i hate that with Drivers not installing correctly... anyways is it the CARD or the Drivers,?? did ya Fix it ok.?

how old is the GFX card is it under a year old if so send it back to be replaced or fixed if ya have the recipt still.. If not then ya may need a new one. do you have Onbard GFX to, if so use that for now untill ya get the other fixed.

I don't have an onboard GFX (atleast to my knowledge ), but I'm trying to figure this out.... Because sometimes the graphics are looking perfectly fine and sometimes it just randomly freezes on my computer and restarts...

I'm not certain exactly what is happening. It could be my video card, and infact, i hope it is since i just bought a 260 gtx. If it isn't, then i'll have to look this problem up and see what it is, and what is causing it.

If ya just brought it and got the recipt, take it back to the shop for an exchange or Refund.

Infinity, I also had a big problem with my graphics card. I was keenly overclocking it and it was going fine, maybe the odd bug like textures messing around, but i had ti fairly stable, until BOOM next day I load up windows and it goes glitchy like almost a tartan pattern and stuff, and screen conked off every few seconds (even the mouse locked up).

All I did was take my graphics card out, leave it for a few days (i had onboard so i used that) and when I had the energy to bother messing around i simply chucked it in and it worked fine (NOTE: do not CHUCK IT IN, actually put it in properly.)

Before you install the drivers is your graphics working fine? Maybe in low colours and res, but if it works stable there, it shouldnt be your card.

I just finished reformatting my hard drives and installing windows xp, and I was about to install my drivers until i saw this. Atm, my res is 1600 x 1200 (because there is no 1680 x 1050 setting without my drivers x.x) and its running ok for now. there's no color distortion or anything, so i'll browse a few forums and run some videos to see how it runs without any drivers installed. So far it seems fine, but it usually takes 10 minutes for it to bug out and die.

EDIT: When i wrote that post where i said i was reformatting my computer, it was 11:46 pm xD. I let it run overnight to finish one partition and i did the other one today .

2nd EDIT: Well, So far its lasted over 10 minutes, so it seems to only crash when I have my video drivers installed. Interesting.

3rd EDIT: reinstalled my drivers, and now i'm testing out the temps on my video card

I had an extremely similar problem when I installed a different version of windows. It was running very well, I attempt to load drivers, and im locked to a TINY resolution (like 640x480) and 4bit colours. Had alsorts of problems. Me thinks might be the OS, but im not sure. Its most probably a problem with the os and the video drivers. I had to install a differnt version of XP to sort out the conflict.

Ok, I finally figured out what the problem was, and my the title of the thread is correct XD. I probably OCed my card too much (i had it pumped up from 400 mhz to 600 (main clock), shader was around 1100-1200, and the memory clock was pumped up from around 400 mhz to 550) and I believe it overheated and got screwed up. When I thought that this had happened, I put my card in my old PC, (amd Athlon x2 3800 with like 4 or 3 gbs of ram) and the same graphical problems occured.

Afterwards, i figured I had nothing to do until i got a new video card (getting one on Christmas eve anyways, which is 4 days away) so my I decided to follow my dad to help him find some stuff to fix that HDTV that we got. When we got to the sore (which was called Fry's Electronics) we found the stuff and passed by the computer section which had cases there. While we browsed the cases we found an amazing case with 5 built in fans (3 of them were 23 cm fans, one of the top, and 2 on the sides O.O) and i found it being only $80, so my dad instantly said "We're getting this". So, I wound up paying $80 for a new case and i spent the past 4 hours switching my motherboard, and all my other computer parts into this case, which now has about 7 or 8 fans in it and its dead silent. While switching my motherboard over, i found a screwed in cover that was covering something on my motherboard which i had never noticed before. Once I unscrewed it, i found out that it was a monitor slot, and therefore I found out that i really did have an onboard gphx card . For no apparent reason, the guys (HP) who built my computer decided to cover a slot which can be VERY crucial if the video card died and you needed a backup to plug in your monitor and have a working temporary GFX card. Anyways, after putting everything in and taking a gamble and plugging in some cables, I got it working on my first try :>. Well, as long as no flames are shooting out of my case, i consider that to be working fine xD.

In the end, I got everything to work besides my video card (using integrated GFX atm). I'll try leaving my 8400 gs out of my case and laying there for a few days to see if it works, and if it does i'll probably sell it on ebay or keep it as a backup.

Always check for artificial glitches (I think that's what they're called in english) when you OC your gfx I OC'd a bit too much and I got some square looking things on my screen after about 20 mins

And the moral of the story....don't overclock if you don't know what you are doing.

Yes.... Luckily I didn't fry my card, hell, lucky I didn't melt the case, it was running at almost 90 degrees.

I've overclocked my card for about 11 months now and it just recently died. I find it ironic that it died a week before i get a knew one, but there's isn't really that much to know when overclocking, tbh.
