Post by Ownia » September 2nd, 2006, 10:23 am

I just got a job offer. Nice quiet job as a Customer Service Representative but I need to know a bit about consoles. Im not very familiar with Gamecube and Xbox. I have played ps2 a bit but still dont know the godo and bad sides of the 3. So if anyone could give a me a short review or a comparison i would greatly apperciate it.

hmm, I'll try my best

Xbox: One of the first popular internet console. Had famous game like Halo and Halo 2 as well as some other great hits, when the xbox was first released the controller was huge and had complaints makeing microsoft (the maker of Xbox) release the S-controller, smaller and more comfortable fit to the hands

Specs:
-CPU: 733 MHz
-250MHz custom chip named XGPU
-Polygon Performance: 125 M/sec
-Total Memory: The RAM in the Xbox will be supplied by Micron, it will be 64 MB running at 200MHz DDR

Playstation 2: This was another big console hit for rpg fans (Final fantasy games) who liked playing over the internet, the ps2 did not have as many games for over the internet as the xbox but it still made a big success. Sony (makers of PS) also made a new version (2005 I think) where it would hold less memory but fit better in small spots like between boox and such.

Specs:
-CPU: 300MHz
-RAM: 32MB
-Polygons: 66 million per second
-Graphics: Dedicated graphics synthesizer connected to CPU via 64-bit 1.2GB/s bus

Gamecube: This little box (from Nitendo) was one of the most famous for its shape as well as the controllers, this console was the smallest and had the smallest CD's (very small half the diamiter of a regular CD) out of that generation as well. The gamecube did support internet connections but very few games were made for that. Big hit games were mostly from mario.

Specs:
-485MHz custom CPU with 162MHz custom graphics processor
-40MB total memory; 2.6 GB per second memory bandwidth
-12M polygons per second; texture read bandwidth 10.4 GB per second
-Dimensions 4.5" x 5.9" x 6.3"

Xbox 360: This is the only console that has been released in this consoles generation, even though microsoft (maker of xbox 360) managed to release their console before the two other companies could, it was very buggy/glitchy. Microsoft mostly aimed for people who wanted to play over the internet more and made this console mostly for that, there are friends selection, points to earn for playing downloadable demos and much more, Big hit games were: CoD2, project gotham 2 (or three cant remember) and a few various ones.

Specs:
-3 symmetrical cores running at 3.2 GHz each
-9 billion dot product operations per second
-Graphics: 500 MHz
-512 MB GDDR3 RAM, 700 MHz DDR

Wii: This little odd thing from nitendo introduces a new type of gameeplay. How you might ask? its all in the controller, the wii's controller actually looks like a TV remote and has motion sensors and the right, left, up, down and the a b buttons. This controller is espescially good for sword games or star wars. Alot of people await its release with impatiance

Playstation 3: Sony's new gaming rig, altho the controllers are pretty much the same the games sure wont be, with its new graphical updates, it might even pass the xbox's 360 graphics as some sources say. More RPG games will be coming from this console as well as more internet access and things.

How is any of this going to help in "custuomer services"?

I think you need to give us your job description as your job title is very misleading.

The controllers are not pretty much the same. You failed to mention the fact that they have motion sensers inside. It does look pretty much the same, but it is significantly different. They've gotten rid of the rumble feature.

From http://uk.gamespot.com/news/6149586.html?sid=6149586 :
The PS3's controller now looks roughly like a Dual Shock 2. The size and button placement seem identical. But there are a handful of key differences. You'll feel right at home when you pick it up, but this controller has definitely evolved.

For starters, it's wireless and startlingly lightweight. The Bluetooth device has a mini USB plug on it, presumably for charging. The L2 and R2 triggers are analog and feel quite nice. There's a new central button that has the PlayStation logo on it. It doesn't appear to be functional, but it seems like a likely spot for some sort of "home" or "menu' button.

The biggest change is inside the controller. There are motion-sensing gyroscopes inside the controller that will detect tilting as well as raising and lowering. We get the feeling that wii've seen this in another upcoming console, but we'll save that discussion for message boards or something. Warhawk is one of the games that supports the tilt sensor, and it feels surprisingly tight and easy to use. Flying the plane by tilting the controller is very intuitive.

One thing you won't find in this new controller is force feedback. The rumble feature was said to interfere with the motion-sensing devices. Sony's Phil Harrison even went so far as to tell us that "rumble was last generation, movement is this generation."

I don't know much of the playstation (I only like Gran Turismo, totaly awesome game, but not going to buy it for 1 game) but I do own a GC myself.

Lots of people whine about the GC being a game for kiddies. I for one can say that's not true. The GC is for all ages. You have sucky games like Mickey Mouse which are ment for people like 6 years old (The game teaches kids stuff etc). My sister got it for her birthday. You also have games which are for 18+ like Resident Evil, I love the Resident Evil series, the game is way too awesome, specialy the story behind it. Most populair games for the GC are the games which are made around the Mario Genre and everything that has to do with Nintendo (Mario & Luigi, Donkey Kong, The Legend of Zelda, Metroid Prime and much, much more). Those games are fully Nintendo, you won't see those on any other console. Also, most games for the GC have tons of humor in it (again, the mario games etc, brilliant!). Nintendo has games which are tons of fun which you can play with 3 of your friends to have a great laugh.

What I noticed is that the Xbox got all kinds of action games. Shooting games, fighting games, racing games. That console is not for young players but for people around 16 years and older. The Playstation is a bit the same.

What I'm trying to say is that Nintendo creates games which they (The crew at Nintendo) created while a console like the xbox has games which have no relation witheachother or their creators (If you understand what I mean).

I hope it helps a bit.

the job description is pathetic. what they really want is someone who should actually be working to build these computers.

to be a customer service guy you need to understand "microcomputers"? Are they taking the piss.

I seriously believe this is a job you could go into blind (not literally) and be able to make a career of it. Its a customer service, and like all customer services, if you do not know the answer, you have a switchboard and some numbers. Push them and diver tthe caller ;)

That's fair enough... If you look on google there will be LOADS of site to give you relative information and compare the consoles etc.

mor ethan likely they will not "quiz" you on much as they usually provide a lot of training on these forms of jobs. The thing you need to worry about is presentation. In other words polite and dont be cocky ;)
