It's best to teach them how to do tricks / learn words etc. when they're very young, as they pick it up much more easily that way. My parrot is 12, so we got him when I was around 8/9 years old and as a result he hasn't been trained to do anything particularly impressive, but I'm happy that's the case as he was a good pet to experience in my younger years (and onwards!).
