This was not "americans and canadians", that was only added to spark rivalry, although it is still a true message (well, at least what I have read)

No, seriously, this was a message between a boat and a lighthouse, whether or not it was army (I doubt it) and the story has been twisted to sound more stupid than it already is.

I dont believe that the US army wouldnt know the position where they were...
If they knew where they were they probably also knew it was a lighthouse and not a boat. I actually think it doesnt even matter whether it was US army or a fishing boat. When ur on sea u tend to know what is sending u a message.
