Since when did knowing a trade such as being a carpenter/mechanic have anything do with a shop? Over here they are simply called either "technology", or if you choose a more exact class, you can choose "Wood-work, Metal-work, Textiles, Graphics, Resistant Materials (mix of wood/metal/plastics)...

home economics is a subject in our social direction
but i think u cant compare the german schoolsystem with the english one
i was on an exchange by an host family and also visited the school --> only think i could say omg (all was so easy)
