Some problems

Post by Luke » March 23rd, 2006, 1:51 am

Well i'm having a few problems that are quite annoying, hopefully it can be fixed otherwise i wont bother making this map.
The first problem is with compiling, when i add something new to my map and compile i sometimes get
q3map.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
this happens after a short pause at
emitting triangles...
while its compiling.
The most obvious thing you would think is the thing added is the problem, and although the map compiles when i delete that section, when i take that section and put it in another map it compiles in 3 seconds and works fine.

Another thing is opening the map in radiant, it takes bloody ages! but why? when i open the dawnville single player map which is quite big with lots of detail ect, it opens really quickly :?

well do you have lots of brushes and lots of angles?

other than that, I cant really think of why it wont want to work.

in what ways is that section connected to the rest of the map, and what, if any, scripting is involved?

There is a fair amount terrain/patch mesh in the map...the .gsc(scripting) has nothing to do with compiling process, and theres none yet anyway :P

The problem has happened twice.. once when i added bended road, which was fine until i copied that peice of bend to use in another area...and it happened again when i manipulated the vertices of a patch to make something...but each of these things work fine individually....i guess its something to do with the amount of vertices in my map or something :?

i remember having a similar problem when building "jumping-falls"

my problem was in a section that was already build and had been sitting there for more than a week (without problems).
all of a sudden it started breaking me up.

it turned out to be one litle triangle in the cable section of the bridge.

my advice is :

let your last aded piece where it is,
back up your map,
and start deleting, say 25% of your first build section,
compile.

if you still get the error,
delete and compile more untill you dont get the error anymore.
when your clear of errors,
put back in the last deleted section,
and start hunting for the litle b*st*rd which is causing the error.

it might take some time, but it will be satisfying to find the litle devil.

That advice would be the best advice.

you could also try making sure all your terrain is set to detail (this way will be quicker but I cannot guarentee it will work, and therefore may take longer)

Thanks for the advice. I'm trying what leveller said, and started deleting things.. I kept trying to compile each time, and after deleting 2 simple brushes it would compile again, but when i go to the backed up map and delete just those 2 brushes, it didn't work :o

Your compiler must really have something against you map.
