Re: IW has just screwed the pc community
I honestly think 402 has misunderstood the question when thinking logically.
Even with 5 minutes research you can find out there are nearly 20000 people playing CoD4.
now lets go with bottom ends and say 75% would be buying MW2.
Thats 15000 people.
Lets say an average server population of 24.
Thats 625 servers required.
Do we honestly believe IW would be able to afford to run and maintain that amount of servers?
There are two things that answer this question:
1) The game DOES have dedi support and 402 is a moron
2) The game uses a shared bandwidth setup where each computer is a host.
Lets hope it is not the latter.

No, this was not what was said.KillerSam wrote:To clarify Drofder, from what I gather IW wouldn't control the servers, they would be the "operators" who make the connections between the players. They would essentially just provide the "master list" but of players rather than servers, making connection between players PC's. The servers are run locally from your pc, if you leave the game the 2nd person to connect is 'hosting' teh game e.t.c. Meaning that the host gets a 0-5 ping.
Only PRIVATE matches are run in this manner. He stated IW.Net would be running the matchmaking servers.
I am going to have to relisten, I am sure of it...

Re-listening, I would take it all with a grain of salt.

Triple post:
GJax: "Those games are hosted by the IW.net; the public ones?"
402: "Exactly".
I seriously sense, he is misunderstanding these questions...

Re: IW has just screwed the pc community
Doesn't it actually require more work to change everything related to servers hosting, rather than copying the already used system?
Could anyone explain this situation to me?

Re: IW has just screwed the pc community
Yes, it requires a lot more work. By disabling the ability to have dedicated servers they are vastly limiting pirating capabilities for multiplayer (or so they think) as well as gaining more control over the environment their players play in, thereby creating an essentially console environment of crap. Not only did they disable that ability which in itself would not be easy, but they created an entire PC customized matchmaking system (which I'm sure sucks cock as we all know how good IW is with that sort of thing) as well as an entire server side system to create these matches and lobbies (assuming there are lobbies) which requires servers and maintenance on their end. If you consider server upkeep and costs, they may very well be paying more for this matchmaking system than the previous dedicated server system, thereby paying more to screw us over. To create an entire system like that would take several months at least, and my guess is closer to a year. It will undoubtedly be incredibly buggy to begin with and with their level of PC support it will probably not get much better.
Consider how many games out there support matchmaking for PC. The only one that comes to mind off the top of my head is L4D, made by Valve. I think it's safe to say Valve has the best customer support of any company on the market, they release at least 1-2 patches a month and cater almost solely to PC. Yet, I never hear the end of complaints concerning that matchmaking system. Now, consider IW/Activision, a money chasing, corporate, console driven pile of crap. The matchmaking system will be, at best, several times worse than the one implemented by Valve. I wouldn't be surprised if it is broken at launch honestly.

Well, on the bright side, they got one thing right by switching over to VAC.
But honestly, like I've stated before, I've lost hope in IW after seeing how they were obviously focusing on consoles after CoD2.

Yeah VAC isn't bad. I guarantee there will be cracked servers, I'm sure most pirates will try 10x harder than normal to get it done just to prove a point. IMO, boycott MW2, pirate itNightmare wrote:Well, on the bright side, they got one thing right by switching over to VAC.

Consoles aren't bad. But once they start focusing on consoles instead of PC while it's clearly a PC game is going over the line.

Im aure the minority of people who pirated cod 4, for example, doesnt make up for the amount lost with legitimate customers who are disgraced. Im just baffled how a awesome PC game with some great mods and mappers and PC community can be fucked by this.aicaramba wrote:No cracked servers, so less piracy.
