CoD4 causing computer to crash?

Post by cianw1 » December 12th, 2011, 10:26 pm

Ok so this happened to me last night, and has just happened again just now. I was playing CoD4 and then all of a sudden it freezez, and I cant tab out or start task manager, also the light on my computer shows that no data is going to-from the hdd. Then I restart computer and everything is fine but if this continues it can be quite annoying and might be damaging data? Also this time just before it crashed i went to about 10fps and after a few seconds it went back to normal for 5 mins and then that is when it crashed. Does anyone have any possible answers, or has it happened to anyone else?

Never heard of something like that happening, no errors at all when you restart computer?

If you find a solution try and post it here for it anyone has the same issue, good luck.

Edit: Also try running it on highest graphics, see if it crashes sooner (could mean it's a temperature/power issue if it does).

Sounds like your usual overheating problem tbh.

What are your computer specs?

PSU / GPU / CPU / RAM?

And as Madness said, try running it on diffrent settings.

From my experience if it is a power issue the PC completely shuts down, as if you have just pulled the plug on it (rather than just freezing). And with overheating I thought the windows DoS screen normally states something about overheating, either when it overheats or on the reboot- not too sure about that though.

I still think it's a power issue because of this :
I cant tab out or start task manager, also the light on my computer shows that no data is going to-from the hdd.
Maybe your voltage settings in your BIOS are set wrongly.
Could also be a RAM issue.

Also, does this only happen on CoD4 ? Or also with other games?
Did you try running CoD4 without running ANY other application?

if u dont have a decent computer then i reckon the computer cant handle it very well and is crashing as a result. it happened with my old computer. with my new laptop if has the same problem that it goes down to like 20 fps instead of 250 for about 10 seconds then goes back to normal but it doesnt crash. but i have to admit it becomes extremely hot

My graphics card use to do that before it died... be sure to check if there are any green boxes appearing after long time of playing or on windows startup.

Dust in your pc could also be the problem.

Had this problem 2 month's ago and it was an video card.Best solution is to give your pc in a workshop , as fast as possible.

1.open Pc case and clear for dust...videocard fan is important and check it.
2.Workshop.

My PC is pretty high spec i think the Processor is i7 960, video card is GTX 560 Ti, RAM is 12gb, PSU i think is 800 not too sure. Yeah the computer doesnt shut down straight away just freezes completely when i have the chance i will open up the computer and get out any dust that might be there. So far it has only happened with CoD4 and only twice the thing is if its a power issue then i think it would have happened before this as i havnt added new hardware lately .

Ok so this happened to me yet again about 10 minutes ago so i had enough and opened my computer. on my fans were a slight layer of dust and also on the outer case where the fans meet theere was some dog hair and abit of dust so i gave it all a wipe down and cleaned dust filter on PSU fan and as far as i can tell my computer is mostly dust free. I will check over the next couple of days if it crashes again and it it does then i will have to do some more research. If not then i think the problem was just overheating or something.

Ok so i thought that cleaning my computer might have done the trick but it has just happened again today. There is one thing that i think might have caused it which is the thermal paste covering the processor might have 'worn out' and that is why it is overheating. When i was working in a computer repair shop over summer holidays there were 2 computers that had this but i will try and look for other things it could be before replacing the paste.

EDIT:

I launched afterburner and played about 5min of CoD4 and then these are the results. The max temp is 55 which isnt so bad but the CPU usage is quite high it goes right up to 95%
