Creating and editing brushes

Post by steveuk » November 25th, 2008, 3:19 pm

Creating a brush

First thing to do is to create a brush. A brush is a cube in your map that can be manipulated. A brush is most commonly used for anything flat like walls, ceiling, floors, and doors. To create a brush all you need to do is left click and hold on the grid. Then drag your mouse to the desired size.

1. First left click and hold in one corner.
2. While hold the mouse button down drag it to create the desired size.
3. Press "Esc" to deselect.

To move or size your brush in the vertical direction then we need to change the view and continue editing.

1. Switch your grid view to "XZ Front".
2. Create another brush using the same method as above.
3. You can change XYZ views to get your brush just right.

Moving and editing brushes

Selection of brushes.

Now that you have a few brushes laid out you can go back and edit them whenever you want.

* Hold shift and click on your brush will select the whole brush.
* Hold Ctrl and Shift then clicking on brushes will select faces, this is only useful for textures.

Once your brush is selected there are different ways to edit it.

* Clicking inside the brush and moving your mouse will move the brush with your mouse.
* Clicking near an edge and dragging will move the closest edge.
* Holding Ctrl and clicking on an edge will move the edge and the rest of the brush will follow. Useful for slanted objects.
* You can select edges (E) and vertices (V).
o Once toggled just click and drag on the colored points.
* You can use the Clipper Tool.
* You may also press "Space" when anything is selected to duplicate the selection.

Creating / Editing Terrain

Terrain is a type of mesh that is meant to combine flexibility and control, it is a series of triangles connected to editable vertices.

1. First create a brush the size of the terrain you want to make.
2. With your brush selected goto "Patch -> Simple terrain patch".

* The next window is where you select how many vertices you want.

3. Now that your terrain is created you can edit the vertices, press "V" to toggle.
4. Highlight the verts you want to move by making a selection box (blue)
5. Drag the verts in the grid or 3D window.

Creating / Editing Patch Meshes.

Patch meshes are useful for curves and archways because the mesh is clamped to green vertices and influenced by pink vertices.

1. First create a brush the size of the mesh you want.
2. With that brush selected go to "Patch -> Simple Curve Patch".
3. Most patches you need will be 3x3 but you can use more for precision.
4. Press "V" to toggle vertices.
5. Modify the vertices until you have your desired mesh.

Creating / editing Primitives

A primitive is a patch mesh already made into a certain object like a cylinder or a cone.

Creating a cylinder.
1. First make a brush that is roughly the size of the object you want.
2. Goto "Patch -> Primitives -> Cylinder".

Editing the cylinder.
1. Once your cylinder is made toggle vertices "V".
2. Select a row of vertices and move them according to the picture.

The best way to learn this is to play.
