YaNo's Mapping Tutorial [vCoD]

Post by YaNo » March 3rd, 2008, 8:14 pm

When you want to start mapping...
By YaNo

This tutorial is made for the people that want to start in Call of Duty mapping.
In this tut, we will Set up the Radiant and Compiler, and Also make our own little map.

First of all, download both the radiant and compiler:
CoDRadiant (Click me)
CoDUOMaker (Click me)
The compiler will also work for vCoD

Installing CoD Radiant

Open up CoDTools.exe
Click next
Read the License agreement and agree with it.
Read the system Requirements and make sure you have what it takes to run CoD Radiant.
Make sure that the directory is pointing to where Call of Duty is installed.
Install.
Create a shortcut on your desktop.
Exit.

Opening Radiant and Saving a map

Open up your radiant.

You should be asked to locate the cod.qe4 file.
This should be located in C:\program files\call of duty\tools\bin
If you are not asked for the file leave it!

Now we will go and save the empty map you have infront of you.
Press Ctrl + S or the Floppy icon above.

You will get a Save As box,
Go to: C:\Program files\call of duty\main\maps\mp (folder where all multiplayer maps come)
Make the folders till you are at that path. (if they aren't there yet)

Save it as empty_map.map

There you have it, your first map saved.
You can't compile a empty map so do this tutorial (Click Me)
And make your first room.
NOTE:The infoplayerstart is not needed for multiplayer maps.
Just do Right mousebutton -> mp -> deathmatch_spawn.
Now that you have your first room with a light and a spawn, save it as mp_test.

Compiling and Testing Map

Open up CoDUOMaker.exe and go to options, be shure that everything looks like this:
Image
And just click 'ok' after that is set.

Now click in the left upper on CoD and then on MP.
You will see mp_test in the list, select it and click build -> start
Now wait untill the black window goes away. And click cancel in the other window.

Now you have compiled.
Click the VCLog button to test your map.

Tada! Your first map is completed, compiled and you're playing it!

Making a .arena file

This file is used to add maps to the menu in 'Make New Server'.
Just open notepad and put this in it:

Code: Select all

{
map "mp_test" // the .bsp file and for the command /map mp_test
longname	"mp_TEST" //the name you will see
	gametype	"dm" //available gametypes
}
Safe this as mp_test.arena somewhere you'll remember.

Packing the map (pk3)

The only thing you need will be WinRaR (Click Me)
After thats installed Read this tutorial:
Making a Pk3 (Click me)

Done!

Now you are done and have your own pk3 with your map!
Put this map in your /main folder, go into Call of Duty
Open up the console and type /map mp_test

You have succesfully made your own map!

With some subtle advertising.
Coding is Poetry. Mapping is Art.

No, we just don't 'advertise' other sites. We do affiliations (see small links on right hand side of every page on the site), because they're also linking to us. The only 'ads' we have are for Honor-Guard (in return for 3 CoD4 servers - pretty damn fair deal) and Google Ads (to get revenue from the site).

Oh ok. Can I add my site as an affiliate?

Code: Select all

<a href="http://deathlyinvasionclan.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://www.multicoregamers.com/images/affiliates/deathlyinvasion.jpg" alt="deathlyinvasionclan.com" height="50px" width="100px" border="0"></a>
