Outdoor Portals

Overview

Before you begin portaling the outside areas of your map please go over Indoor Portals if you haven't already. That covers the basics of portals and what it is, basic information stated in the previous portaling tutorial will not be repeated here. Outdoor Portals will cover the basics of using terrain to create portals as this is usually the #2 question on portaling seconded by "How do I create portals?". All principals will be covered first then applied to a custom map.

* Use your filters except for terrain.
o Keep terrain because it will be needed for reference, remember you can hide (Ctrl h) and unhide (h) it at will.
* Box in your terrain with caulk.
o Any thickness caulk but keep it reasonable.
o Cover the entire bottom of your map with caulk.
o No caulk on top, leave that open for the sky.
o Create your cell walls with reasonable height and length but try to keep thickness constant.
o Remember caulk is invisible and solid in-game, if it's used for a portal then the other side of the caulk will be blank so try to hide the caulk walls as best as you can.
* With most outdoor portaling you don't have to worry about detail brushes but keep them in mind as you will have to do that on the outside of buildings and other objects in the fields.

Hills or Craters

Hills:
Use hills to hide caulk brushes under, make it as high and as long as you can. Be sure to look for the caulk poking out from under the terrain, adjust accordingly.

Craters:
We can top off the crater or hole with a single portal brush and create another cell. We will have to modify the caulk floor though.

Hedge Rows

If you have any useful hedge rows then drop a caulk brush in the middle of them but don't go over 75% of the height. Make sure there is a lot of foliage where the wall is because of the possibility that the player will look at the caulk in-game and see the map cutoff there. Do not put caulk in hedges you want the player to run through.

Buildings

After making most of the building "Detail" you can use the building walls to substitute caulk, just stop when you get to the wall and continue where it ends

Application
* Create your outdoor map.

lan your approach to portals.
* Try to keep number of portals reasonable.

Create the caulk walls according to your outline.
* Keep the wall thickness persistent.

Cell 1
* Begin by portaling your hole with a portal brush facing up and on top of that another portal brush facing down on top of it.
o This makes the hole its own cell and we create the bottom portal brush for the cell that will be on top.
Image
Cell 2
* Create your cell on top of the hole.
o Pay attention to the corners of the portal brushes, below are examples on how to handle them.

Cell 3 & 5
* On the other half, create portal 3 and 5 from the previous picture.
o Make the border of 3 and 1 the same way when you made the border for cell 1.

Cell 4 & 6
* The edges that don't border another cell should be easy.
* Use the technique used in the border of cell 1 and 3 for the borders of cells touching each other.
