If we have to check their demos and we got no mods installed (I never download mods, only maps and total conversions) doesn't that mean that I can't watch it too ??? So far I can watch every demo without mods installed so I have no idea on why it shouldn't work. Thats what I was trying to find out....

If its not the client with the custom pk3's, then could the demo be screwed if the demo taker had a mod on at the time?

If you cannot change your file extension (because it is not visible to change) you need to go to:
Control Panel < Folder Options. Then select the 'View' tab at the top and look down the list for "Hide extensions for known filetypes". Uncheck that box, and change the .zip to .pk3
