Skinning tutorial

Post by BatterY » September 13th, 2010, 5:17 pm

My very first tutorial which I actually had patience to put some effort, so don't be harsh :)

Programs used:
- GIMP 2
- PakScape

1. Finding default skins

Open up pak3.pk3 found in Call Of Duty/main
Image

Find a file called: "m1carbine.dds"

Make a new folder in Call of Duty directory, named something like: "my skin mod", copy the m1carbine.dds into your new folder.

2. Editing .dds files

Open m1carbine.dds in gimp(note: you need to install dds-plugin before this)

When you open the file, a popup appears. Just toggle Load Mipmaps off, since we don't need them.

For the simplest editing/result, we're going to deesaturate and darken the skin so it looks "cool".

Click Colors > Desaturate and choose "Average" then click OK.
Image

Then change brightness and contrast in Colors > Brightness-Contrast
Image

And we're done with editing! Save the image.
3. PAKing and testing

Now you should have an edited m1carbine.dds in your "my skin mod" folder.

Open up PakScape, make a new file and add a new folder, name it "skins"
Image

Copy the m1carbine.dds into the skins folder. Save the file as .pk3 into "my skin mod" folder.

Launch CoDMP.exe, select mods, then your mod folder name, click launch and start a new server.

Done!

I didn't read the tut because I don't have cod1.

But wouldn't it be smarter to make a tut for something more active?
Because cod4 is more played then cod1 so I think more people would find your tut useful if you make one for cod4.

Well, I chose the carbine, because it's in 1 single file. When it comes to player skins, they're in multiple files. For example the head, boots and body are in different files. But sure, I try to make a TuT for it :)
